Language is fundamental to who we are as people and serves as a powerful instrument for socialization. Our ability to perform effectively and efficiently in nearly every area of life, whether as individuals or as members of a social group, is essentially dependent on our linguistic abilities.
In Ghana, from elementary school through all higher levels of education, English is the official language and medium of teaching. Since English is the primary language for teaching and learning, for official work, and for international communication, it is essential for students as well as for all segments of the public to study it.
In Ghana, the Senior High School is the next level of schooling. Students would have learned the fundamentals of language at this point, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. To give children the confidence to speak in the language, these skills must be significantly developed.
The following are the main objectives of teaching English as a topic in senior high school:
1. strengthen language abilities and knowledge that were learned in junior high school.
2. strengthen the language abilities and talents that were picked up in junior high school.
3. increase pupils’ communicative proficiency and offer them the self-assurance to communicate.
